Special Steel Clad Plate – an Economical Solution with Long Term Market Potential!

Clad plates are an economical solution compared to solid CRA plates even in today’s low nickel price environment. They are extensively used for a wide range of industrial applications such as oil & gas, refineries, petrochemical & chemical, power generation, desalination or shipbuilding.

Clad steel plates are composed of two or more different materials called base metal (usually carbon steel or alloy steel) and cladding metal (CRA including stainless steel, nickel alloy, titanium, etc.). They combine the higher strength and better thermal conductivity of the base material with the corrosion resistance of the cladding material.

There are two different production processes to manufacture clad plates: roll bonding and explosion bonding. Alternatively, weld overlay can be applied on finished equipment (e.g. vessel components, pipes) as a competing solution to clad plates.
