Special Steel Clad Plate – an Economical Solution with Long Term Market Potential!

Clad plates are an economical solution compared to solid CRA plates even in today’s low nickel price environment. They are extensively used for a wide range of industrial applications such as oil & gas, refineries, petrochemical & chemical, power generation, desalination or shipbuilding.

Clad steel plates are composed of two or more different materials called base metal (usually carbon steel or alloy steel) and cladding metal (CRA including stainless steel, nickel alloy, titanium, etc.). They combine the higher strength and better thermal conductivity of the base material with the corrosion resistance of the cladding material.

There are two different production processes to manufacture clad plates: roll bonding and explosion bonding. Alternatively, weld overlay can be applied on finished equipment (e.g. vessel components, pipes) as a competing solution to clad plates.

This in-depth market report (more than 250 pages) discusses the global production and consumption volumes for roll bonded and explosion bonded clad plates and provides detailed market structures by grade, dimension and application.

European and Japanese suppliers are still leading the market for roll bonded clad plate but Chinese producers are steadily entering the market, building up capacities that could potentially exceed the volumes of today’s top producers. The production of explosion bonded clad plates is already dominated by Chinese producers who have rapidly expanded their output during the past decade. When combining rolled and explosion bonded clad plate, China is the biggest producer but so far the plates have been almost entirely used in the domestic market. This, however, is expected to change in the near future as Chinese mills are quickly gaining experience and Chinese engineering companies are getting more involved in global projects, which increases the chances of Chinese players to be selected as preferred suppliers.

A detailed description of applications for clad plates across various industries forms the key part of this market report. More than 40 different types of equipment are discussed including typical dimensions and materials as well as a list of key end users.

The report concludes with a realistic forecast scenario by region based on actual project activity. Major projects under construction or in planning stage will be listed for Europe, America, Asia and Rest of the World.

Finally, company profiles of leading producers of rolled and explosion bonded clad plates are included as well as profiles of clad pipe producers and a list of end users.
